Champions

On Thursday Oct. 18, 2007 the Girls Soccer team at Bennion Jr. High became District champions. It was amazing to be a coach for a championship winning team, for once in my life I was able to see things from a different perspective. As a player you can never see that you might be wrong or that a ref might be right. This season has really opened my eyes to a new side of sports. For example, in the championship game we scored a goal to tie the game, but in the process we also plowed over the other teams goalie. The ref called a foul and no goal, everyone was going crazy about it being such a bad call. Maybe because I used to play goalie, or maybe I was finally thinking like a coach, I could see the foul and see why my team was mad they took the goal away. I think the ref made the right call, even with everyone around me complaining about it, I could understand the call, no matter what they said. I was always one of the kids that allowed sports to bring out the worst in me sometimes, but as I age I can see some of that fading. When it comes down to it, that was also one of the reasons I quit playing, I didn't need anger over powering me every time I stepped onto the field. Now I play for the love of playing, and I don't always let the scoreboard determine if I had a good game or not, but I'm still a work in progress with a long way to go. So congratulations Bennion Jr. High for an undefeated championship season.

Everyone involved with the soccer team got a rose from the school. It was the school's way of saying good job. The student body president delivered it to my 8th period class, so I enjoy telling people that a 15 year old student gave me a rose. It is really pretty though.
