I know my western friends think I'm crazy when I complain that they don't sell boiled peanuts at the baseball game, but in the south they are sold at every sporting event. Heck you can buy boiled peanuts in the parking lot of most Walmarts in the south. After I get my Chick-fil-A and Rush's fix when I come south, my dad always buys me a bag of boiled peanuts. I spent the third quarter of most high school football games eating a bag of boiled peanuts that I bought a the concession stand. I have been told that boiled peanuts is an acquired taste, but once you start enjoying them you are stuck, I think they are totally addicting. I know people tease me for not have a southern accent and not always eating like a traditional southern, but this is one thing that can defiantly define me a southern. In fact, I haven't met many people not from the south that have liked them, then again I don't think they give the a chance, but is OK with me-- more for me to eat. I think I am finally going to attempt to make some when I go back out west, just to see all my friends freak out.
On May 1, 2006, Gov. Mark Sanford came to York County and officially signed into law, H.4585, to make the boiled peanut South Carolina's official state snack food.
SECTION 1. The General Assembly finds that boiled peanuts are a delicious and popular snack food that are found both in stores and roadside stands across the State, and this unique snack food is defined as peanuts that are immersed in boiling water for at least one hour while still in the shell. The General Assembly further finds that this truly Southern delicacy is worthy of designation as the official state snack food.
